Explore Tanjay City



Tanjay City is a fourth class city in the province of Negros Oriental, Philippines.

It was created by virtue of Republic Act 9026 otherwise known as "An act converting the Municipality of Tanjay, province of Negros Oriental into a component city to be known as the City of Tanjay". The Act was approved and signed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo on March 5, 2001. This act, which is a consolidation of House Bill No. 8880 and Senate Bill No. 2256, was finally passed by the House of Representatives and the Senate on February 8, 2001. Tanjay was finally proclaimed a component city on April 1, 2001 after a plebiscite was conducted for the purpose.



Tourism

Tanjay City is also known for its Tourism Program which started in the late 1980s. Through a recent Sangguniang Panglunsod Resolution, the city is now dubbed as the City of Festivals. The major tourist attractions are:
              • Sinulog de Tanjay (July)
    The Saulog sa Tanjay is a colorful celebration in honor of St. James the Greater. It is held  yearly on the 24th of July before the fiesta celebration.
    Street dancing is performed  by the participants wearing colorful costumes . This religious event is based on the legend of St. James the Greater miraculously aided the Christians riding a white horse and slew hundreds of moors during the battle.

              • Paaway sa Kabayo (July)
    An exciting, thrilling and oftentimes bloody fight among studs for supremacy over a female horse. More than 100 horses have been trained solely for this twice a year event.

              • Pasko sa Tanjay (December)
    Pasko sa Tanjay is Month-long Christmas festivity in Tanjay Town, Negros Oriental featuring cultural presentations and contests participated in by all sectors of the Region. From the residents to business sectors and civic groups spends time for the preparation to join this huge event that starts on Dec. 1 and ends on the feast of the Three Kings.

              • Budbod Festival (December)
    It is best known, moreover, for two other proud-makers: the portable feast "budbud sa Tanjay", which has birthed a Budbud Festival due to the popularity of its glutinous delicacy; and the "Sinulog de Tanjay", a festival, with an 1814 ancestry, revived in the 1980's to enliven the fiesta.

  • Red Land Scenic Views (Bulon, Sta. Cruz Nuevo)
  • Casa de las Dueñas, Hacienda Santa Escolástica (San José, Tanjay)
